			<title>Bartlett on Queensland results</title>
			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Latest/Bartlett-on-Queensland-results.html</link>
			<description>
Senator Andrew Bartlett gives his take on results in the rest of the State.

Being a lifelong resident of Brisbane, I feel best qualified to give
some comment on the results in that city. While I know less of other
areas, it is still worth looking to lessons from some of them.

			<title>Bartlett on Brisbane</title>
			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Brisbane-City-Council/Bartlett-on-Brisbane.html</link>
			<description>
From Senator Andrew Bartlett, an in-depth assessment of the Brisbane results.

Despite the Liberals running as Campbell Newman's 'Can Do' candidates, rather than as Liberals, they will pleased that they now have the buffer of six very safe seats - McDowall, Chandler, Walter Taylor, Macgregor, Hamilton and Pullenvale - with a margin of over 20 per cent, plus another five with a margin of more than 10 per cent. In contrast, Labor now have very few safe seats, with only one &amp;ndash; Morningside &amp;ndash; clearly above a 10 per cent margin.

			<description>
Senator Andrew Bartlett (http://andrewbartlett.com) gives his take on the local elections in Brisbane.

Local government elections were held around Queensland yesterday. As
with most elections over the last 20 years, I spent a large chunk of
the day at a polling booth.

Well, the local elections have come and gone, and there have been some big changes throughout the State, with long-serving incumbents losing and majorities tumbling. Here's a brief summary.

I have just wrapped the major centres - please email us updates from your neck of the woods - j5.wilson@qut.edu.au

			<title>New order in Cairns</title>
			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Cairns-Regional-Council/New-order-in-Cairns.html</link>
			<description>
Mike from Cairnsblog (http://cairnsblog.net) considers the rise of Cairns' first female mayor, Val Schier.

Although neither Byrne or Schier has conceded or claimed victory, it looks likely that within the next 48 hours, Cairns' will usher in it's first female mayor in 130 years.

Schier holds the lead on 27,509 votes or 47.11%. Incumbent Mayor, Kevin Byrne, gained 25,843 on the election night count, 44.26%.

			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Latest/Big-results-Statewide.html</link>

Townsville: Tony Mooney looks to be out, Les Tyrell in.

Cairns: Val Schier looks to be in ahead of Kevin Byrne

Sunshine Coast: Bob Abbott is romping it in.

Gold Coast: Ron Clarke seems to be holding on.

			<title>Cairns, elections and independent media. </title>
			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Cairns-Regional-Council/Cairns-elections-and-independent-media.html</link>
			<description>
On election day, Mike from Cairnsblog vows to soldier on with his online independent journalism.

I've been looking forward to writing this column.

It signals the
end of the line for questioning and battling what we see as this local
Council's inability and incompetence to work with the people.

I
started this exercise only mid last year, and was spurred to do so from
many far from satisfactory interactions with the Cairns City Council.

			<title>Judgement in Cairns: Byrne &quot;not fit for office&quot;</title>
			<link>http://qlddecides.com/Cairns-Regional-Council/Judgement-in-Cairns-Byrne-not-fit-for-office.html</link>
			<description>
Mike from Cairnsblog (http://cairnsblog.net) makes his judgement in the Cairns Council race.

I was looking through the files, and saw some interesting leaflets that I thought I'd share.

I moved to Cairns just before the 2000 election, and quickly settled into Yorkeys
Knob. There were promises from Big Kev that he would deal with the
Northern Beaches access roads if he was elected. They have a history of
flooding and blocking residents in almost every wet season.
