Who supports whom? A reader asks about party affiliations.

The issue of associations between political parties and local council candidates can get a bit muddy.

Conventional wisdom is that voters don't like party politics intruding on local councils. The idea is that community-based candidates appeal to voters, who want their council chambers to produce outcomes, not to be a breeding-ground (or retirement home) for party hacks.

But everybody knows that, even if they're not so up-front about it, a lot of candidates for council will have a past or present association with one of the big parties. Sometimes ratepayers are inclined to call the contenders' bluff.

Margaret Robinson in the Southern Downs wrote in to us here at Qlddecides.com, detailing the question she'd asked of her local mayoral aspirants:

I have sent an email to all who are going for Mayor and asked: who do they support? Labor or Nat/Lib? I also said that their answer would decide my vote.

Not one replied. If they had replied, I would have asked the one that I supported who did they want me to vote for on their team.

Well now I will put in a informal vote.

We're sure Margaret won't go so far as to infringe our electoral laws, but she's hopping mad about being ignored.

So, will the Southern Downs candidates disclose any affiliations? We'll keep you posted.

I hope Margaret won't vote informal. Even if the range of candidates may be less than satisfactory and her treatment by them appears to be poor, I think the choice is still likely to be an important one, nonetheless.

I am an independent running for Lord Mayor of Brisbane.

I am not affiliate with any political party. I believe that the political parties contesting the elections in Brisbane (essentially Labor, the Liberals and the Greens) are at worst corrupt and, at best, deeply flawed.

Nevertheless, in Brisbane as well as in Toowoomba, I think the choice between these parties is important. Clearly the Greens, for all their faults, have better policies than either Labor or Liberal and do stand a small chance of winning possibly up to four wards. Nevertheless, they stand no chance of winning control of Brisbane City Council, so the choice will ultimately be between Labor and Liberal.

I ask people who support myself, as a general rule, to give their second preferences to any other good independents, after that to the Greens and after that to Labor. As it is optional preferential and not compulsory preferential, I would recommend that no preference be given to any Liberal candidate.

Whilst having a Labor dominated Brisbane City Council would be a very long way short of ideal, given the past record of the Jim Soorley Labor administration, and the appalling record, since 2004, of the Labor Councillors who agreed to the North South Bypass Tunnel, and the Hale Street bridge, I still think the chances of communities eventually being able to prevail against the powerful vested interests who are destroying our quality of life and our children's future would be greater than under a Liberal dominated Brisbane City Council.

I think Margaret will be pleasantly surprised with the local papers this week, each candidate has been asked a series of questions and one of the questions were about affiliations.

Where do you get the idea that there are party politics in the Toowoomba Regional Council Election. Name one person standing who has a party endorsement.

A party endorsement is not the same as supporting a particular party.

I think it's much better for candidates to honestly admit which party they are close to or members of (if any), even if formal endorsements have not been made.

I hope that Ms Robinson votes in a way that indicates her satisfaction or otherwise with the choices available to her.
