Moreton Bay is a new council that has been severely traumatized by its forced amalgamation. It was formed from the Pine Rivers and Caboolture Shires and the city of Redcliffe and the residents aren’t happy.  40 percent thought their local council was heading in the wrong direction, and 65% nominated amalgamation as the reason for their response. Only 35 percent thought their local council was heading in the right direction.

Joy Leishman the mayor of Caboolture and Allan Sutherland mayor of Redcliffe are both contesting this election. Our polling suggests that they are the front-runners, and that a third candidate, Peter Houston, is also a possible. Leishman and Sutherland both draw support from their existing areas, Leishman more strongly than Sutherland. This is probably because Houston is also a Redcliffe City Councillor and competes with Sutherland for Redcliffe City votes.

There are no over-riding issues that will determine this election. The character of the candidates and their policies on the environment will be the most important issues, and it is issues about candidates that appear to predominate. If it weren’t for the amalgamations I suspect that residents would have been looking to return the status quo in their area.

Given the population of Caboolture is roughly twice that of Redcliffe, this should put Leishman well ahead unless Sutherland clearly outpolls her in Pine Rivers (population about 50% above Caboolture).
I think the Moreton Bay mayoral election is going to be close between the two mayors, so this week's polling in the three former areas (Pine Rivers, Caboolture, Redcliffe) should be interesting.

I think this is wrong for Pine Rivers.
Mayor Yvonne Chapman was swept to power in Pine Rivers along with up to
six of 10 current councillors (and a mayoral candidate Bryan Galvin) in
1994 when former shire chairman Rob Akers and his team were routed.
While it is usually difficult for a sitting councillor to get the flick,
voters from time to time wreak vengeance against a council.
With Mayor Chapman resigning at this election, I think such a time had
arrived this year whether the election be for Pine Rivers or Moreton
Bay.

Hi Bernie, I can only go on the polling, and as Chapman wasn't running I have no knowledge of Pine at all, apart from how they feel on amalgamation, so you might well be right.

We did pick-up a bit of support for Sutherland in Caboolture, but not much for Leishman in Redcliffe, so that might even things up a little.
