Logan City Council election candidate Geoff Leeming will push for an audit of all publicly owned bushland in the council’s area to help ensure it is protected for future generations. Mr Leeming, who is standing for election in Division 1, said a Bushland Protection Audit would identify all Logan bushland and the different laws and regulations covering it. “We should then look at whether some parcels of bushland land need stronger protection, so they will pass on untouched to future generations,” Mr Leeming said. He said Logan City Council also should make it much harder for developers to turn privately owned bushland into large-scale housing estates, which put pressure on local infrastructure, especially roads. Mr Leeming said Logan had an excellent environmental reputation after local residents defeated the Goss Government’s ‘koala road’ in the mid-1990s. “We are experiencing very rapid growth in Logan,” Geoff Leeming said. “As a businessman I support sensible development but it should not come at the expense of our bushland and environment,” he said. “Many of us moved to Logan in the first place because of its outstanding bushland areas. “We need to ensure that progress does destroy the greenbelt that runs through our area.” Mr Leeming said nearly 66% of land in Division 1 was bushland. “Areas such as the 435 hectare Daisy Hill Forest Reserve are well protected but we need to ensure that other pockets of local bush also are locked up by the law,” he said. He said council should consider more carefully if it should allow developers to build hundreds of new houses on former bushland sites. If council approved such intrusive developments, it should ensure the existing community was not stuck with congested roads and reduced services. Geoff Leeming, 44, who has lived in Daisy Hill for 18 years, is running as an Independent in Division 1 in the Logan City Council elections on March 15. Geoff, who is married with four children, owns and runs a Slacks Creek fencing and ladder manufacturing company that employs 21 mainly local people.
