Todd over at Rebellion thinks that we might as well engage with the highjinks of local elections. 

I have always been amazed by the extents that people will go to to win elections. The saying goes that all politics are local, and local politics are often the worst offenders for the great game of silly buggers.

There was a very bad 80’s era movie called ‘Brewsters Millions’, I won’t bore you all with the details, but there was a line in the movie and I paraphrase “Why would anybody want to spend $500,000 for a job that pays $100,000″.

In for the long run?

You’re the mayor, and only ten percent of voters think your council is heading in the right direction while seventy-one percent think it isn’t. That would normally mean a career change, but maybe not on the Gold Coast, with 54% of our sample supporting Clarke and only 16% Molhoek and 24% Tate, his major challengers.

Canned Dots? Can Do! Lord Mayor unveils innovative policy

micro-dots.jpgLord Mayor Campbell Newman today announced that he would offer a rebate on DataDots – a crime-fighting revolution in a can – if he were re-elected with a Council majority on March 15.

DataDots are microscopic labels, which carry unique serial numbers invisible to the naked eye, which can be applied to any item with a spray can or cotton buds.

The solution dries into a hard, microscopically thin invisible coating with the DataDots held securely in place.

Campbell gambolling in

Campbell Newman should win the election with a vote of 60% or better. While residents are evenly split on whether the city is heading in the right direction, the Labor councilors get most of the blame for the problems. Newman is winning because he is seen to be trying to get on with the job “in difficult circumstances”. Voters want to give him a fair-go, and he has every chance of taking seats from the ALP who are seen as obstructive, particularly if voters continue to think of the contest as being of the Newman team against Labor candidate Greg Rowell.
