Redoubtable bayside blogger Rebellion gives us his take on the race for spots on the newly-formed Moreton Bay Regional Council.
The great mass of the Great State of Queensland goes to the polls in just over two weeks to decide who they want managing their Roads, Rates and Rubbish for the next four years.
There is a special feel in the air to this election as their is so much additional baggage attached, due to the unilateral decision taken by the Bligh Labor Government to overide the history of the State and impose amalgamations on the councils. We halved the number of councils, but on the up side, we doubled the number of people who consider Captain Bligh and her cronies to be the worst thing to ever happen to the state since cane toads were introduced. It is a signature example of the old adage that Every Cloud really does have a silver lining.

Mike at Cairnsblog is hopping mad about what he thinks is an ill-considered development in Cairns.
This disgusting 250+ apartment complex at Woree, with convenient
Service Station plonked in the middle of the property, is a perfectly
designed ghetto, circa 2010.
GlenCorp have recently installed
some finishing touches, including a new sign. This is made up of a
stock image they stole from the Daintree Image and Tourist Library,
along with two Frangipani flowers and a Times Roman typeface title.
Udo's 3 year old must have put this logo together with crayons at
kindergarten last month. I bet he's got the original stuck on his
fridge door at home.

A Can-Do Council will greatly expand E-waste collections and
introduce a raft of other measures aimed at decreasing landfill, Lord
Mayor Campbell Newman said today.
Cr Newman today announced his garbage-recycling plan that included
introducing quarterly electronic waste collections into Brisbane
without any additional costs to ratepayers.
The move follows the huge success of the last E-waste collection day
that saw Brisbane recycle 182 tonnes of E-waste – more than either
Sydney or Melbourne.

For all the argy bargy about public transport that goes on in Brisbane, it's worth remembering that in the capital it's some way ahead some of the State's other growing cities. Cairnsblog gives details of some community action in the far north on public transport.
Cairns Action for Sustainable Transport (CAST) is a recently formed community group.
They
are encouraging community discussion and participation in developing
environmentally sustainable and socially just transport systems in
Cairns and our region.

The issue of associations between political parties and local council candidates can get a bit muddy.
Conventional wisdom is that voters don't like party politics intruding on local councils. The idea is that community-based candidates appeal to voters, who want their council chambers to produce outcomes, not to be a breeding-ground (or retirement home) for party hacks.
