currumbin_protest_sign.jpg Currumbin residents campaigning against a proposed development by Resort Corp on Pacific Parade at Currumbin have festooned the houses on the street with unauthorised banners urging residents to vote for candidates who "support the townplan".

The development, opposite the exit from the Currumbin Surf Lifesaving Club carpark, is at the end of an easement between two older blocks of units. The proposal seeks approval for a 4 storey block of 15 units on a site that is currently zoned for 6 units and three stories. The development application only provides for 12 carparks.

Resort Corp is a prolific coastal developer that has already completed one development in the area and specialises in larger resort style developments from the Tweed Coast, north to Noosa. Its joint managing director Paul Brinsmead was mentioned unfavourably in the NSW government inquiry into the Tweed Shire Council.

Spokesperson for the Currumbin Residents Association Minna Knight, who lives in Woodgee Street which runs parallel to Pacific Parade, said that the association was not campaigning for any particular candidate, and did not oppose "good quality development".

Both Councillor Chris Robbins, who represents Division 14, and her challenger Liberal John Vanzino, oppose the development. Opponents say they also have the support of Mayor Ron Clarke. We have been unable to contact the other mayoral candidates, with the exception of John Bradford who is also opposed to the application.

Local residents are concerned that an approval will set a precedent which will turn Currumbin into another Surfers Paradise.

Councillor Robbins says that the application is complicated as it was lodged during the "grandfather" period of the old town plan which allowed for higher density development in the area. Residents say that failure by the developer to properly advertise the application further complicates the issue.
