Norman Miller, independent candidate for the Cairns Regional Council for Division 4 said that there were accidents waiting to happen in Cairns because of road safety issues.
“Residents in McCoombe St Bungalow have indicated to me while I was doorknocking that they are fearful that Chinaman Creek will overflow its banks and cause flooding in their street again as occurred earlier this year” said Mr Miller. “All candidates for the Cairns Regional Council elections have been asked to attend a public meeting called by the Cairns Action for Sustainable Transport on Tuesday March 11 at 7pm at the Serbian Hall in Greenslopes St Edgehill” said Mr Miller “and to fill out a questionnaire, the answers to which will be posted on their website.” Mr Miller said “I support sustainable public transport and believe public transport should have better funding so that it can be more frequent, have better routing and more extensive coverage. This would reduce the number of cars on the road and hence reduce greenhouse emissions. At the same time, disadvantaged people would have better access to transport.” “If elected to Council, I would be prepared to lobby for: • Promoting community inclusion by providing an equitable, affordable and accessible public transport system • Facilitating community participation in needs-based planning and service design to identify local transport solutions • Support a community-based approach to developing sustainable local transport solutions • Better integration of public transport with cycling and walking facilities in the Cairns region • The provision of cycling paths, end of trip facilities such as bike racks, lockers and drinking fountains and on key routes drinking fountains and shelters • The provision at key interchanges of access for pedestrians and parking for cyclists” said Mr Miller.
