Don't pay for ferries, man!

Another public transport opinion from Sarah over at The Voice of Today's Apathetic Youth.

Campbell Newman has promised four new CityCats and up to three new CityCat stops if he is re-elected. Don't forget, this is the man who wanted to send the iconic CityFerries to the scrap heap.

The CityCat stops will only be built- get this- by his developer mates who bid the most money to have the stop located near their new apartment complexes. Not where they're needed most, but where his mates, who donate tens of thousands of dollars to his re-election campaign, decide they should go. He's leaving transport on Brisbane's river to developers rather than making decisions on public transport based on what best serves the public's needs.

And he's so blatant about it! I can't believe it. Will Brisbane be stupid enough to re-elect this man for a second term as Lord Mayor?

The Libs and ALP are in a bidding war for announcing more new ferries or buses. After jointly committing to spending billions on a car tunnel you wonder if you can take them seriously. Neither major party is looking at public transport from a whole system point of view -- like why is it that buses never run on time?

By design.

Bad design.

Look for a party that is addressing these issues and doesn't take donations from developers.

Buses don't run on time because Brisbane CBD was designed for horses and carts not wall to wall cars and buses driven by harassed drivers trying to cope with passengers who have not the correct ticket or the price of one, who ask stupid questions and are sometimes downright rude. Then there are the pedestrians all trying to arrive at work or get home from the rat-race the same time as everybody else standing at the very edge of the pavement being a danger to themselves and everybody else.
As a former bus driver, I could go on.
Be thankful that a bus arrives at all to take you where you want to get to with the minimum of fuss.
