Cycling advocates Isabelle and Michael write asking that cyclists be better catered for in South East Queensland.
Cycling is the best form of sustainable and equitable transport which also provides social interaction, recreation and physical activity. -Better end of journey facilities ie bike lock up and showers. -Support for the completion of any set Busway and Bikeway programmes. -Funding for the development of cycle networks around schools to support the Active Schools Programme. -The expansion of Active Transport capacity in Council, inline with the increase in investment -Lowering of speed limits to 30km/h to benefit the safety of pedestrians and cyclists in high density urban areas. Especially around schools, in areas of the Brisbane CBD and other suburbs. -Re-prioritisation of road space towards sustainable forms of transport over private motor vehicles. -Support for early completion of key aspects of the Smart City plan. In particular pedestrian/bike cross-river strategies for the local area. -Completion and upgrading of key arterial bikeway routes into the CBD and high attractor zones. Other items that should be n the agenda are: -Completion of the bikeway on the East of the SE Busway When the SE Busway was built there were substantial sections of a modern bikeway built on the east of the busway. This bikeway has never been completed and is a pulic assett wasted while commuting cyclists continue to struggle with a narrow, rambling, poorly lit and bumpy shared path on the west of the Freeway -More bikes on buses in areas without rail services to accomadate families with young children who cycle but cannot manage the ride into the CBD, for example.
